Frequently Asked Questions
❓ What are worm castings?
Worm castings are the nutrient-rich, natural byproduct of composting worms (in our case, European Nightcrawlers and Red Wigglers). Sometimes called “black gold,” they’re loaded with beneficial microbes, plant nutrients, and organic matter that improve soil health and plant vitality - without chemicals. Think of them as nature's perfect plant food!
❓ How are WiggleWorks Worm Castings made?
Our castings are produced through a process called vermicomposting - which is where earthworms consume and decompose organic materials. Our European Nightcrawlers and Red Wigglers produce the castings in climate-controlled conditions, using clean consistent carbon/nitrogen balanced bedding, pure Missouri Ozarks well water, oyster shell flour and high-quality worm chow.
As the worms consume these materials, their digestive systems break them down, concentrating the nutrients and beneficial microbes. The resulting castings are then harvested, creating a powerful and natural fertilizer.
We carefully maintain the worm beds to produce nutrient-rich castings, teeming with microbial life. Every handful of WiggleWorks Worm Castings helps improve soil structure, enhance moisture retention, and support long-lasting root health.
❓Are worm castings the same as compost?
While both worm castings and traditional compost are excellent soil amendments, they're not exactly the same. Compost is made through the decomposition of organic matter by a variety of microorganisms, often in a heat-generating pile. Worm castings, on the other hand, are specifically produced by worms, which results in a product with a finer texture, higher concentration of readily available nutrients, and a richer microbial diversity.
What are the benefits of using worm castings?
Worm castings offer a wide array of benefits for plants and soil:
Nutrient-rich: They provide essential macro and micronutrients in a form that plants can easily absorb.
Improved soil structure: They help improve soil aeration, drainage, and water retention.
Enhanced plant growth: Users often see stronger roots, more vigorous growth, and increased yields.
Disease suppression: The beneficial microbes in castings can help suppress plant diseases.
Pest deterrence: Some studies suggest they can help deter certain pests.
Completely natural and organic: They are safe for all plants, pets, and children, and are an environmentally friendly choice.
They’re safe, gentle, and effective for everything from vegetables and flowers to houseplants and lawns.
❓How do I use worm castings in my garden?
Worm castings are incredibly versatile! Here are some common ways to use them:
Top Dressing: Sprinkle a thin layer (1/4 to 1/2 inch) around the base of established plants. Water thoroughly afterward.
Mixing into Soil: Blend 10-20% worm castings into your potting mix for containers or into garden beds when planting.
Seed Starting: Mix 1 part castings with 3 parts seed-starting mix for superior germination and seedling vigor.
Transplanting: Add a handful of castings to the bottom of the hole when transplanting seedlings or plants.
Compost Tea (Worm Tea): Steep castings in aerated water for 12-24 hours to create a liquid fertilizer that can be applied directly to plants or as a foliar spray. Use about 1 cup of castings per gallon of water.
Lawn care: Spread thinly over grass before rain or watering.
❓How often should I apply worm castings?
For best results, apply worm castings every 2-4 weeks during the active growing season. For established outdoor gardens, a monthly application is often sufficient. For potted plants, every 4-6 weeks works well.
❓ Are worm castings good for all plants?
Yes! All types of plants, including vegetables, herbs, flowers, trees, shrubs, and houseplants, can benefit from worm castings.
❓ Can you use too many worm castings?
Not really. Worm castings won't burn your plants or roots, even in high concentrations, because they are a natural, slow-release fertilizer. While a little goes a long way, exceeding the recommended amounts generally won't harm your plants.
❓ Can I just use worm castings instead of fertilizer?
Worm castings can enhance plant growth, but are not a complete fertilizer and may not provide all the nutrients a plant needs. It is best to use them with other organic fertilizers and compost for a balanced approach.
❓What is the difference between worm casting tea and extract?
Worm casting tea is made by actively aerating a mixture of worm castings and water (instructions below), resulting in a higher concentration of beneficial microbes.
Worm Castings Extract is made by simply steeping castings in water, leading to a less microbiologically active solution, but still an excellent plant food.
❓ How do I make worm casting tea?
Worm Tea Recipe:
1 cup WiggleWorks Worm Castings
1 gallon dechlorinated water
Optional: 1 tablespoon unsulfured molasses (feeds microbes)
Steep for 24 hours using aeration (like a bubbler) or stirring occasionally. Apply as a root drench or foliar spray to give plants a microbial boost.
❓ Are worm castings safe for kids, pets, and pollinators?
Yes! WiggleWorks Worm Castings are:
100% natural and chemical-free
Safe to touch and smell
Gentle on plants and skin
Non-toxic to pets and wildlife
They’re the perfect choice for family-friendly and organic gardens.
❓ Do worm castings smell bad?
No! Quality worm castings should have a pleasant, earthy smell, similar to fresh, healthy soil - not manure or compost. Ours are screened and packaged fresh to keep them clean and odor-free. A bad or sour odor could indicate improper storage or anaerobic conditions.
❓ How long do worm castings last?
Stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, worm castings remain biologically active for up to 6–12 months. Use breathable containers or buckets with ventilation holes, keep them slightly moist (like a wrung-out sponge), and store them in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight to preserve microbial life.
Are worm castings organic?
Yes, worm castings are an organic and natural fertilizer produced through the decomposition of organic matter by worms. Many commercial worm castings are also OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) listed, indicating their suitability for organic gardening.
❓What kind of microorganisms are found in worm castings?
Worm castings are teeming with a diverse community of beneficial microorganisms. As worms digest organic matter, they create an ideal environment for a vast array of microbes to thrive. These include:
Bacteria: The most abundant type, performing vital roles in nutrient cycling and organic matter decomposition.
Fungi: Including mycorrhizal fungi that form symbiotic relationships with plant roots, and saprophytic fungi that break down tough organic materials.
Protozoa: Microscopic organisms that graze on bacteria, releasing nutrients that plants can absorb.
Nematodes (beneficial): Microscopic roundworms that play a role in nutrient cycling and can suppress harmful soil pests.
Actinomycetes: A type of bacteria that gives healthy soil its earthy smell and helps decompose complex organic matter.
❓Are these microorganisms safe for my plants and garden?
Absolutely! The microorganisms in worm castings are entirely natural and beneficial. They are an essential part of a healthy, living soil ecosystem. They work in harmony with your plants, rather than against them, promoting organic growth without the risks associated with synthetic chemicals. Using worm castings introduces a "probiotic" boost to your garden, creating a balanced and thriving environment for all your plants.
